York and North Yorkshire's new mayor who promised to “deliver value for money” is under fire after spending almost £32,000 on an “ugly” logo that omits the county’s iconic White Rose.
Labour’s David Skaith, pledged to “always spend taxpayers’ money wisely” before his election last May. But he has now been accused of presiding over a “staggering waste of money” on a controversial new logo bearing his name and consisting of interlocking green lines.
The £31,860 logo has been slammed on social media, with one asking: “£31k for something I could make in MS Paint in 5 minutes?”
Now, a North Yorkshire Conservative councillor has called on graphic designers to “do Yorkshire proud” and produce
alternative logos that “restore the Rose”.
Cllr Chris Steward, leader of the Conservative group on City of York Council, said:
This is a staggering waste of money. “With most residents saying they don't know who the Mayor is, and certainly not what he stands for, it is incredible that he feels the need to focus on a logo with a cost which will amaze all.
He and his office should focus on delivery on transport, homes and the economy not gimmicks, expensive rebranding and bizarre logos.
