Julian Sturdy MP House of Commons

This morning in the House of Commons, Julian questioned the Health Secretary regarding the possible acquisition of a Da Vinci surgical robotic system for cancer treatment by York Hospital.

This ground-breaking new medical technology allows for more precise surgery, with greater dexterity and visibility for the surgeon via miniaturised instruments and a high-definition camera inserted into the patient. The result is less scarring, reduced pain and blood loss, and a lower risk of complications.

At Questions to the Secretary of State for Health, Julian asked:

The wonderful local charity York Against Cancer has been approached by York Hospital regarding part-funding of a Da Vinci surgical robotic system for cancer.

This revolutionary machine allows for fewer and smaller incisions, meaning faster patient recovery, shorter hospital stays, and ultimately better and faster cancer care.

So can the Secretary of State therefore assure me they fully support local collaborations wherever needed to introduce these machines, and they are doing everything they can to roll out this new technology across our health service?

Sajid Javid responded by stressing the central importance the government attached to cancer care, and his department’s commitment to learning about this new technology and making it available across the NHS.

After Questions, Julian said:

Having heard about York Against Cancer’s initial discussions with York Hospital about collaborating to finance this device, and the amazing improvements in care that could result, I thought it was vital to raise the importance of government support for rolling out this new technology with the Health Secretary.

The potential York arrangement would copy that used by other NHS trusts, although in some areas the NHS has also financed acquisition wholly from its own budget, so it is vital to work out the funding detail.

The bottom line is that this enhanced surgery experience must be secured for York patients by whatever means necessary. We must embrace new technology that can speed up cancer care and reduce waiting times, and I will engage with our local NHS leadership, and Health Ministers, to obtain this new provision for York residents.
